Tips for Selecting your Wedding Gown

Picking out a wedding gown is probably the most fun and exciting part of becoming a bride. But it also may be difficult finding the wedding dress that is perfect just for you.

  • Take your time -- shop early so you make sure you have plenty of time to find the right dress. This is not a decision you want to make when you are rushed or stressed.
  • Window shop -- look around to find out what is out there, what will fit with your wedding theme, your personality and wedding location
  • Choose a dress which will fit with the season. You don't want to be wearing a fur muff if you're getting married on the beach in the summer.
  • Select the right fabric. Make sure you feel comfortable in the fabric you choose. You don't want to be uncomfortable or find out that you're itchy during your wedding ceremony.
  • Schedule in time for fittings. Make sure you have plenty of time to order your dress and then have the fittings necessary to customize the dress to your proportions so you can look your best.
  • Pick the right size -- don't plan on losing that extra 10 pounds so you can fit into your dress. If you do end up losing weight that's great -- it's easier and less expensive to take your wedding gown down a size that to have to let out seams.
  • If in doubt -- pass! Make sure your friends tell you the truth if the dress does not flatter you.
  • Listen to bridal shop staff. They generally know what they are talking about. They know what is available. Be very clear with them when describing what you want your wedding gown to look like, and then allow them to bring examples to you.
  • Try everything on. Do not just buy a dress off the rack. Make sure it is the right one for you.
  • check price tags. Wedding gowns vary widely in price. Make sure it fits in your budget (along with shoes, jewelry, headpiece, and undergarments).
  • Check store policies -- are deposits non-refundable? Are fittings included or will you have to pay more

Brides look forward to their wedding day from the time they are young. When you imagine yourself walking down the isle, or standing under a canopy on the beach, or going through a drive-thru wedding chapel in Las Vegas, you most likely have a good idea of what you want to look like. Don't settle when buying your wedding gown. Make sure you are thrilled with the gown you select.
