Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer

Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer

Here are several tips on selecting the right wedding photographer:

1. Personality. If you do not connect personally with your photographer, chances are you may have conflict and not be pleased with the results. If your photographer has a great portfolio that fits your style and is excited to work with you -- that's a good sign.

2. Reputation. If possible find someone you trust to recommend a wedding photographer. If you get good feedback from several people for the same photographer, you are likely to have a positive experience as well.

3. Don't hire the first photographer you find. Shop around. Prices vary widely, and styles can be extremely different. Make sure you check out their portfolio and that they match your personal tastes and style.

4. Get everything in writing. Many photographers will offer lifetime guarantees -- read the fine print. Clear contracts are very important.

5. Find a photographer with well kept professional equipment. You can tell a lot about a photographer from their camera.

6. Make sure your photographer has a valid sales tax license and proof of insurance.

7. When you look at their portfolio -- make sure it is current work, not something they shot 5 years ago. Also, each example should be a full wedding album, not just one or two photos from various weddings. You want to see exactly what type of album you will receive.

8. Find package deals. Many wedding photographers will offer package deals and you can save money on your wedding by taking advantage of special offers. Sometimes you can get a custom made package which will be perfect for your needs.

9. Ask about timing. How long after the event will it take to get your completed album.

10. Pricing. Can you afford this particular wedding photographer? Make sure you understand all of the costs included -- sometimes there are hidden costs for services.

11. Refunds and deposits? If you cancel, will you be able to get a refund? Is there a deposit required? If the photographer does not show up for some reason, what is your recourse?

12. Contracts. Read all of the fine print. Make sure you understand everything clearly and make sure the contract includes everything you discussed and agreed upon.

Remember -- your wedding photographer will set the tone for your wedding photographs -- a reminder of your special day that can last forever. If you have to skimp on other areas of your wedding, do not settle for a "family friend" as your wedding photographer. This is one aspect of your wedding that will be around for a long time -- and you want to make sure those memories are beautiful and you look like a star on your wedding day.
